Meatballs in tomato sauce

An excellent tapas dish

Makes 8 large meatballs



4 sausages

125g beef or pork mince

1 tsp mixed herbs

1 egg

Salt and pepper to taste


1 tin chopped tomatoes

2 cloves garlic

Splash of red wine

1 tsp mixed herbs

½ tsp sugar

Salt and pepper to taste


  1. Take the sausage meat out of its skin and mix with the mince until well blended.
  2. Beat the egg and add to the meat mixture, along with the herbs and seasoning.
  3. Shape into eight balls and fry with a little oil until browned all over.
  4. Meanwhile, grate the garlic and fry in a little oil until fragrant but not brown.
  5. Add the chopped tomatoes and the wine, bring to the boil and then simmer until the sauce thickens. Add the herbs, sugar and seasoning to taste.
  6. Once the meatballs are browned, place in the oven and cook for ten minutes.
  7. Serve the sauce over the meatballs as part of a main meal or tapas.
